 IP CommKit - Datakit Network To Host Software Interface


IP-CommKit supports remote login, file and directory transfer and remote execution, and maintains all CommKit security features for access control, user ID mapping and file permissions. For custom applications and developers, IP-CommKit includes the CommKit library,, and supports the Transport Layer Interface


IP-CommKit requires no changes to your host applications, your host configuration or your node configuration


IP-CommKit uses your host’s standard LAN interface cards, and accesses it exclusively through the drivers provided by the host vendor. This makes it easy to use IP-CommKit with the newest, most powerful hosts


IP-CommKit allows a single LAN card in the host computer to connect to as many as eight UTM modules in the BNS node. This configuration is ideal for applications requiring many low-bandwidth circuits. For higher bandwidth, hosts can use up to eight separate LAN interfaces. IP-CommKit is flexible enough to fit your application


IP-CommKit does not compromise the security of your BNS-2000 network, even when the host and node are connected through a public network. While the host and node exchange standard UDP datagrams, the contents of these datagrams are encoded with multiple layers of proprietary protocols, leaving even ambitious hackers frustrated. With IP-CommKit, the host is no longer bound to the node by the multimode fiber optic cable distance limitations. Hosts and nodes can be located anywhere in the world with IP network connectivity


Large applications can exploit the computing power of modern hosts by serving more users. Each UTM module supports 512 virtual circuits. Using eight UTM modules, a single host can serve 4096 virtual circuits

DTTN2524 - Universal Trunk Module (UTM)

  • Fully-integrated BNS-2000/BNS-2000 VCS module. It supports interconnection with other BNS-2000/BNS-2000 VCS nodes, remote shelves (MPCs) and all types of SAMs

  • Supports an IP infrastructure interface that is compatible with an IP-DSU. It also supports an RS-530 interface with both DDS and Frame Relay protocol support at serial rates up to T1. ATM networks are supported via an RJ48C connector at T1 or E1 rates

  • Companion product to the DT-4000, and supports the same trunking interfaces. The Universal Trunk may also be installed in SAM64s/504s to upgrade their trunking interfaces

  • Contains an SNMP agent, which may be queried by one or more SNMP managers. It also supports sending SNMP Trap messages to a predefined SNMP manager

  • Field software updates, which can be initiated from a remote location, take place while the Universal Trunk is in service and transporting data. As new features and enhancements come out, you can upgrade to a new release of the Universal Trunk software using an industry-standard Telnet application or serial RS232 connection to the Universal Trunk

  • 10 LAN Interface - The 10BaseT port is a trunk port that is used for interfacing with an IP-based network. It simultaneously supports IP-DSU style DDS BNS-2000/BNS-2000 VCS trunks, and TCP/IP peer-level protocols

  • T1/E1 Interface - An RJ48C connector is used for this interface. It is used for support of ATM networks at either T1 or E1 rates

  • DB25 Serial Port - The Serial port may be software configured as a V.35 DTE or a RS232 DTE. It is used to interface to BNS SAMSL/SAMML (DDS) style trunks. Frame Relay is also supported on this port

  • RJ45 Console Port -The Console is used for initial configuration, if necessary


 DTTN2525 - Universal Mediation Interface (UMI)

  • The UMI is both a replacement and enhancement of the LCS60 product. It allows both synchronous and asynchronous endpoints connected to a BNS network to access endpoints on an IP network. Similarly, endpoints on an IP network can access both synchronous and asynchronous endpoints on a BNS network. The UMI can be located anywhere between the BNS and IP networks, simplifying configuration, administration and maintenance without affecting operation or connectivity

  • The UMI supports the notion of a Closed User Group (CUG). This is an important feature for protecting sensitive endpoints in a corporate-wide network without the burden of special "security servers"

  • The UMI supports the concept of a Hunt Group, which allows it to steer calls to individual members of a group of devices sharing a common address

  • The UMI can maintain a set of mnemonic host names for "dialing" into the IP network. This allows the UMI to perform a translation between a user-provided name and its associated IP address and TCP port number

  • Field software updates are made available as new features and enhancements come out. These upgrades can be initiated from a remote location, and take place while the UMI is in service and transporting data
