CBM of America, Inc. is very pleased to announce
another new member of its family of "OptoIso
Patch Panel Protection" products. In addition to
protecting central office network elements that are
connected to Lucent Technologies CO/SAM's and
Cisco router asyncronous connections, the
new CBM Multi-Mode Iso Translation (MIT)
OptoIso patch panel can now provide
optical isolation for high density
asynchronous/synchronous interfaces such
as RS530, V.35, and RS232.
The new MIT OptoIso patch panel protects CO
network elements that are connected to the widely
used Applied Innovation AI-180 Switch, Cisco
2600/3600 router and Lucent Technologies 5E switch.
The MIT OptoIso patch panel, not only optically
isolates, but also provides a translation function
which allows for switch selectable input and output

device interfaces. For example, the MIT card can be
easily jumpered so that an input interface such as
RS232 can be translated to output a V.35 interface,
RS530 or any of a multitude of supported interfaces.
This functionality provides great flexibility and
allows for a wide variety of toll and switch
network elements to be shared and
protected by a single optoIso patch panel.
CBM designed the OptoIso patch panel to
address the problem of ground plane
violations which are caused when network
elements, such as switch and toll elements, share the
same patch panel, but are using separate
power/ground sources. This situation violates the
isolated ground plane and creates a potential for
ground loop surges, which can cause intermittent
problems, and in some cases, extensive damage to
the attached network element.
