OptoIso 232-24 Patch Panel

Optical Isolation Patch Panels

OptoIso 232-24 is a DC powered patch panel that provides 24 individually optically isolated RS-232 ports. Designed to protect telecommunication network elements from ground loop induced system failures, OptoIso 232-24 converts data signals to light pulses and creates an optical gap to isolate any grounds.

Easily mounted in a 19" or 23" equipment cabinet, OptoIso 232-24 gives the system integrator the flexibility to confidently combine network elements irrespective of individual power sources. When network elements, such as switch and toll elements, are sharing the same patch panel but using separate power sources, the potential for system failures caused by ground loop surges is significant. These potential failures are totally eliminated using OptoIso 232-24.

The OptoIso 232-24 front panel consists of 24 RJ45 jacks. Its rear panel connection has 4 TELCO 50 pin ribbon connectors. In between the connectors, OptoIso 232-24 creates an optical gap on each of its 24 ports. Damage caused by ground loop differentials on individual network elements connected across OptoIso 232-24 is eliminated. Similarly, the potential for system failures caused by these ground loop surges is eliminated.

OptoIso 232-24 operates on 48 volts of DC power which means there is no need to provide separate AC/DC power transformation. Each of the 24 RS-232 ports provides over 1000 volts individual isolation. Color-coded LEDs allow easy visual inspection of each port's operation. Space for label identification for each port on the patch panel is provided on the front.

Optical Isolation Patch Panel
  • Twenty-four (24) individually isolated circuits or port-pairs at data rates up to 115 Kbps (RS-232D).
  • Isolation exceeds 1000 volts between the ports of the port-pair.
  • Three (3) receivers and three (3) drivers per port.
  • Four (4) groups of six (6) RJ45 jacks on the panel. Each group is accessed from the back by a 50 pin TELCO ribbon connector.
  • Standard WECO pin-outs from the 50 pin connector to the associated RJ45 jack.
  • Send and Receive activity from each port-pair is displayed by dual color LEDs above each RJ45 jack.
  • Standard 19" relay rack mounting (extends to 23" with included brackets), 3" high (2 rack units), 6" deep.
  • Input Power (max) 35 watts @ 48VDC nominal.
  • Voltage Range: 36VDC to 72VDC
  • Fully compliant with NEBS Level 3 requirements.
  • Scan point connection provides remote alarming upon power failure.

Multi-Mode Iso Translation (MIT) OptoIso Patch Panel

Multi-Mode Optical Isolation
(MMOI)

CBM of America, Inc. is very pleased to announce another new member of its family of "OptoIso Patch Panel Protection" products. In addition to protecting central office network elements that are connected to Lucent Technologies CO/SAM's and Cisco router asyncronous connections, the new CBM Multi-Mode Iso Translation (MIT) OptoIso patch panel can now provide optical isolation for high density asynchronous/synchronous interfaces such as RS530, V.35, and RS232.

The new MIT OptoIso patch panel protects CO network elements that are connected to the widely used Applied Innovation AI-180 Switch, Cisco 2600/3600 router and Lucent Technologies 5E switch.

The MIT OptoIso patch panel, not only optically isolates, but also provides a translation function which allows for switch selectable input and output

device interfaces. For example, the MIT card can be easily jumpered so that an input interface such as RS232 can be translated to output a V.35 interface, RS530 or any of a multitude of supported interfaces. This functionality provides great flexibility and allows for a wide variety of toll and switch network elements to be shared and protected by a single optoIso patch panel.

CBM designed the OptoIso patch panel to address the problem of ground plane violations which are caused when network elements, such as switch and toll elements, share the same patch panel, but are using separate power/ground sources. This situation violates the isolated ground plane and creates a potential for ground loop surges, which can cause intermittent problems, and in some cases, extensive damage to the attached network element.
